Did you have a specific situation you were thinking of? I'm assuming you're talking about older school- aged children or teens?
Anytime you restrict a child, in my opinion, you are showing them that you don't trust them. I believe in natural consequences -- that is, discipling the child based on the negative behaviours (rather than your emotion -- anger, disapointment). I would use a restriction if the child did something that did, in fact, lose my trust. In that case, a restriction would be the natural consequence for that negative behaviour.
