How to make flash usable?

I have decided not to use a flash on the homepage of the site I am working on but i still want to use it as I have some very creative ideas. How do others use flash as a design while making it only an option. Something that won't keep views away from my site because their computers can't handle flash?

If you're planning on making a pure flash website then I'd also offer a non-flash version created in HTML with a simple design to get the content across. If it's just for the homepage to add a cool effect, use Javascript to display an image instead of the flash banner to fill it's spot.
