In my point of view, if you want to be a good webdesigner you need to master tools like Adobe Photoshop/Fireworks/Dreamweaver/Image Ready or similar. There are a lot of tutorials on the internet about the subject and if you got some cash to spend, there are some good video tutorials at lynda.com
Good luck on that.

I am sure there are a number of tutorial programs you could work with that would provide some understanding of the basics

have you checked for web design courses offered at your local college?
even public libraries offer such instruction sometimes.
quite affordable, sometimes close to free

You can have any number of online resources. Really internet is an ocean. Just google the keywords. You will get what ever you want. And my advice would be not to read them but practice them. Only then you will encounter so many practical problems from which you can learn a lot.

Nothing like getting in there and trying. Dreamweaver allows you to test your ideas out and see how they look before you upload it. And I've got quite the library on various web designers, so try a bookstore on occassion.

There are lots of online tutorials that you could start off with, but I really think you should get into a classroom and have some guided tuition too. Try some night school college courses.

I also feel that it is better to join some regular classes so that all doubts and queries are taken care of.Online coaching I have tried but hasn't done something good to me.

Definitely get out and head to the classroom, it may cost money, but it will be worth it in the long run! working in the classroom is a lot easier, on the web it's just that your reading something, not learning from an actual person talking to you..

I've learned a bit from a few tutorials and sites on the internet, but I think some professional classes might help me to grasp the design concepts a little better. Thanks

Many colleges will let you sit in on their classes for free if you aren't looking for college credit for the course, as well, saving you even more money if you are just in the market to learn the skills.
