I think most of the guys will use photoshop and flash. For designing a text logo, it is enough to use photoshop. And in case of picture logo to be displayed in websites, one can go for flashy content. It may be attractive for them. So it depends on the place of usage.

I vote for Photoshop because it works with Dreamweaver and you can go back and forth. There's a steep learning curve to those programs though. Be prepared to pay your dues.

I use the gimp, because frankly I can't afford $700 for one freaking program like Photoshop CE. And remember that is just one program.

I am no expert, but I think the two programs have been designed for different purposes

Well, as I use Dreamweaver for my site design, I am sticking with Fireworks which is also from Adobe for my logo design in the site concerned. It is so easy to master as I am able to create a logo within an hour even without any previous experience using it!

I just have ImageReady CS2 for the banners I design, I don't do crazy stuff, but I can get things done, Image Ready CS2 comes with the CS2 trial and it lets you keep using it after your trial expires, so I see no problem with it, it has almost all the features of PhotoShop for a regular person who needs to just design something occasionally, however, If you are a professional designer who does it day to day, you should have CS4 or CS3.

I would go with photoshop because along with the dreamweaver they form a very good combination for designing.

For a beginner Photoshop is recommended I think. In here you can learn and explore, just like what am doing once in a while.

I'm not surprised to see so many votes for Photoshop. I haven't heard about GIMP for awhile. Does it have a steep learning curve too?
This thread also reminds me of a video I saw where somebody recreated a version of the Mona Lisa in Paint. That was interesting.
