Elements of a good icon design?
So what are the elements that would comprise a good icon design? What would an icon need to look professional?

Strength is the very best element. Study the famous logos like Nike, Addidas, Target has a good one. You want something that when people see it they automatically translate that into recognition of your company. Target's is a good example because that's what their logo is - a target. It's great.

I would say that the idea and theme is the important factor. Because the icon may also be simple. Yet it should be strong enough to propogate your ideas. So develop an icon like that. It must capture the attention easily.

Good contrasting colors and plenty of detail are what I look for in any iconic design. It needs to mean something and communicate that clearly to the viewer as well.

Make sure it catches attention, it's great to use glare and collage a bunch of images together at once, but make it look presentable. If you are making a company logo, make it something related to your company.

The theme and the meaning of your icon means a lot when considering its elemental design.I think they play a more important role in icon designing.

Choose carefully. Play around with some different ideas until you find the right Icon for you.

A good icon is eye-catching and relevant, above all else.

Definitely play with your icon until you find/create something that works for you, as you can never have too many instances of an idea to pick from in my opinion, just more chances to get what you are really looking for.

An Icon and Logo should match the name of your company. It is hard to describe because some logos and Icons are acronyms of the company name and other are symbols. Astada's logo is a icon/symbol but it matches the name. I hope I'm not babbling.
