i think it is best for you to learn it from a person who knows how to do it. it is better to have someone to guide you especially if you are a beginner. it is not that easy to learn through online.

I have a different opinion. I have taught myself most of the software. I have used either online tutorials or books you can buy with lessons or just by poking around in the software and going to the help menu when I didn't know how to do something. Learning what makes a good design is an entirely differnt thing. Sometimes I think that just has to be your natural ability.

I guess you could do it online, but it could be a pretty hard slog if you are trying to teach yourself, there is always a chance that you will loose your motivation, especially if you cannot grasp something.

There are tons of tutorials online that will teach you how to use graphics software. Most are for photshop and gimp though so these are the ones you would be best off learning on.

it all depends on the person really... Some people like to be told what to do and some people like to find things out on their own.
in my personal experience, whenever i try to learn something alone without the help of someone who knows what they're doing, i learn it really slowly, but i never forget what i learned... So it's really up to you if you want to get a personal tutor or learn for yourself with the help of tutorials on the net or help files in the program.
the poking around idea is a good thing too... you can always make a cool design by accident :P
my 2 cents

most of these programs will come with tutorials
should not be too difficult to figure out how to work at least the basic features.
what programs did you have in mind?

Well, if you have lots of time to spare, then I would advise you to go for those free sites out there. But if time is very precious to you, then spend some money to learn it from someone as you will be able to master it faster!

I would have to say go to a class in person, online web design sites are really not that good.. and if you want to be a professional its best to learn from another professional face to face.

Online is the best place for learning anything. You just have to download some e-books in the torrents to start learning. It is a free and a good stuff.

Designing is something you can learn online as well, but it is better and it is recommended to tag along someone who can give comments to your works and tips on how to do things properly.

It all depends on how you learn best. I would think it would be best to learn from a person rather than a tutorial just so you can ask questions and actually get a better grip on things. However, if a tutorial is done very well then chances of learning online can be good. Ideally, an online tutorial backed up with support from live experts would be the best choice.

I strongly advocate trying to learn software and techniques through any means necessary. A lot of the software I know how to use, I taught myself. Most programs offer tutorials, and there are a multitude of books and guides. If you are the type of person that can learn from reading and some hands-on practice, then I say absorb as much as you can!
